Objective: To assess the periodontal treatment needs of psychiatric inpatients in mental hospitals. Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Setting: A case study of Mathari Mental Hospital
Subjects: Seventy two psychiatric inpatients Main outcome measures: The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) together with the WHO color-coded probes was used to assess the extent of tissue destruction and the treatment needs.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 30.7±11.2. Majority of the psychiatric inpatients examined 66(91.7%) had treatment needs and only 6(8.3%) had a healthy periodontium. More than half of them 37(51.4%) needed scaling and improvement of personal oral hygiene, 8 ...
... from this study show that psychiatric inpatients at Mathari Mental Hospital had unmet treatment needs and male patients needed more periodontal treatment than females. Periodontal treatment needs increased with age.
Based on the findings of this study, there is need to set up dental facilities at Mathari Mental Hospital to address the periodontal treatment needs of the patients admitted there. A case control study is planned to determine the effects of the medications taken by the patients on the periodontium.
